Total Station & GIS

Total Station is a tool for land survey and make all essential measurements to determine the relative position of points or physical and cultural details. A surveying expert with license can become members of various building professions. Total station is used as an electronic-optical instrument used in modern survey and construction. In the workshop of we use Total Station which is combined of electronic theodolite, an electronic distance meter (EDM) and software running on external computer known as data collector. Many fields such as Construction Companies, Disaster Management, Archaeological Survey etc. offers life time career opportunity for a surveyor.


Can access computer system and make use of internet to perform search over Google.

Need to Prepare?

Basic Concepts of Civil Engineering.

Tools Expected:-

Windows OS based PC, Smart phone with Internet, Notebook and Pen

Tools used (for the session):-

Reference material for operating procedures for most popular instruments like Trimble, Topocon, Sokkia, Leica.


EDM(Electronic distance measurement), Topographical survey, Stakeout, Surface Volume, Traversing etc.


This workshop will address about advanced surveying terminology with total station. Theory lecture explain the concepts of total station working mechanism followed by practical exercise, which helps to gain practical understanding and essential skill sets required for present surveying industry.


  •   Demonstration of carrying out traversing using total station.
  •   Individual practice of traverse by participants.
  •   Measure remote distance and elevation using special function of TS
  •   Calculate surface volume on the field / Site  
  •   Perform Stake out / Demarcation of Building Layouts / Plot Layouts / Roads / Alignments
